According to a recent study, federal workers could save $55 on monthly fuel costs.
The online-based telework promoting organization figured that current fuel prices cost typical GS-7, Step 5 federal employees $138.80 a month, nearly 7 percent of their after-tax income. The organization's study, titled "Gas Fuels Telework," is based on a survey of 3,500 federal employees registered with the Telework Exchange Web site.If you've been in DC area traffic, then you know that anything that gets cars off the roads is a good thing.
There are other reasons to promote teleworking: disaster preparedness. And as last year's gas Katrina-related gas shortages showed, it's not just about keeping your workforce working in a distributed fashion. Emergency teleworking can reduce gas consumption. In Georgia last year after Katrina, the governor closed public schools for a day to reduce diesel consumption. Of course, this was incredibly annoying to families with children for obvious reasons. (The governor was also accused to implementing the plan at the urging of agricultural special interests.)
What is surprising to me is that Atlanta already had a plan to eliminate traffic that worked very well during the Olympics. The streets and highways were empty during the Olympics. Granted, many large companies shut down during that two-week period. The point is there was a coordinated effort to reduce traffic that worked. If a less stringent plan could be created, it would still be extremely effective.
